In collaboration with the Faculty of Education at Laurentian University, Science North has developed a series of resources to help with the research project “Building Capacity for French Immersion Science Teachers”. At Science North, we seek to develop hands-on, inquiry-based learning opportunities for students and teachers. Through our work with Laurentian University, we have seen many parallels between language learning and science learning. In this section, you will find a series of lessons and videos that will help French immersion science teachers foster an interest in language learning that will continue later in life. Giving French as a Second Language learners authentic situations with multiple opportunities to communicate will help build their confidence in French, as well as enable them to learn key science concepts from the curriculum. We have three introductory videos that encourage teachers to choose science as a subject for French Immersion lessons. These are followed by 4 lesson plans for Grades 7 to 10. Each lesson is accompanied by a science video related to the topic of the lesson. There are instruction sheets that show teachers how to use the science videos along with the lesson plans to facilitate French as a Second Language learning for students.

Build a Submarine

In this lesson, students will apply their understanding of density and buoyancy to create a submarine. Using a pop bottle, they’ll be required to adjust the submarine’s buoyancy so that it can both float or sink. This is an inquiry based activity where students are encouraged to apply the engineering design process. Strategies to teach this as an FSL lesson are provided, as are all student documents in both French and English.

Electronic Gadget

In this lesson, students will plan, build and market an electronic gadget of their choosing. Students will be encouraged to get creative and invent a simple gadget that can perform a task. As part of the process, students will have to make a project proposal to first gain approval. Once they’ve done so, they will have to build their gadget using a battery, wires and multiple loads, requiring them to use a parallel circuit. Finally, students will have to makes a sales pitch to present their product. The planning and marketing of the electronic gadget will support FSL learners while the lesson in its entirety will support the grade 9 science curriculum.  The student handouts are available in both French and English.

'Oh Deer' Ecosystems

In this lesson, students will play a game which demonstrates the balance of an ecosystem and how the changes in an ecosystem will affect all of its components. By introducing different scenarios in the game, students will also have the opportunity to learn about predator and prey relationships, native and non-native species, and evasive species.  This lesson incorporates FSL strategies for teachers and provides all student handouts in both French and English.

Optics Maze

In this lesson, students will learn about the laws of reflection through an inquiry based introduction activity and then apply what they learn to create a laser maze. In the main portion of the lessons, students will be tasked with building a laser system that can be used to protect 9 precious gems in an exhibit hall. Their goal will be to plan, design and build a system of mirrors that reflect a single laser beam to ensure that each of the gems is protected from theft. Students will be asked to demonstrate their laser maze and present how it is used to protect their gem collection. This lesson supports the grade 10 science curriculum and includes a variety of vocabulary strategies that will support FSL learners.  The student handouts are available in both French and English.
